Dog Bloat

Dog Bloat is a serious health risk for many breeds of dogs that have chests deeper than they are wide like Great Danes, Saint Bernards, Weimaraners, Labrador Retrievers, Irish Setters, Gordon Setters, Rottweilers, Standard Poodles and many other breeds. Is your dog at risk?

Dog Bloat or canine gastric dilatation-volvulus is an extremely serious condition with a high mortality rate if not treated immediately. Fast eating, gulping or bolting food, is one risk factor for Dog Bloat.

"Marley & Me, life and love with the world’s worst dog” is a wonderful book by John Grogan, full of many humorous moments and a couple sad ones.  Marley & Me was just released as a movie and is already a 'box office hit'! Marley grew up to be a big yellow lab with a zest for life.  I recommend this book to anyone who loves dogs.  Marley lost his life to his second encounter with Dog Bloat.  It’s the saddest moment in a very funny book.

If your dog is among the 25 breeds that are at risk for Dog Bloat, get informed and talk to your Veterinarian about establishing a program of prevention.  Not all cases of Dog Bloat can be prevented short of a surgical procedure that your Veterinarian might recommend for a dog he/she feels is at severe risk.
